IPL 2022 was different in many ways with 10 teams, two debutants, a brand new champion and a title winning captain. But the biggest difference has been the resurgence of star players due to the emergence of new faces. Sure, some youngsters have caught the eye, but the theme of this IPL has been experience trumping young blood. This year’s most successful batsman Jos Buttler started from the very beginning. After missing the second half of the last IPL season, Buttler was keen to prove himself. And boy did he do it. Buttler has amassed over 800 runs with four centuries (most in a single edition of the IPL); in fact, at one stage, Buttler’s dominance was such that it looked like Virat Kohli’s 973-run tally was under threat. And while Buttler couldn’t surpass Kohli, he certainly set the benchmark by becoming the next best with a whopping 863 runs at an average of 57.53.

KL Rahul’s love affair with the IPL continued in the 2022 season. With 616 runs from 15 matches, it was the third year in a row and fourth overall that Rahul has accumulated more than 600 runs. His strike rate has remained a hot topic of debate, but there is no denying that along with Buttler, Rahul has been the best opener in IPL 2022 for two centuries. David Warner, who has had an impressive season himself with over 400 runs, was given equal competition, but just for his consistency, Rahul dismissed Warner to book the spot for the opener.

One of the young discoveries of this season. When legends like Rohit Sharma and Sunil Gavaskar speak highly of someone and appoint a cricketer to play in all three formats for India, there is really little left to say. However, Varma has been one of the few positives for Mumbai Indians in an otherwise forgettable campaign. While a 14-game run of 397 with two half-centuries is impressive for a batsman playing in his first IPL season, Varma has made heads turn far more. The outstanding characteristics of the 19-year-old Varma were his maturity, understanding of the situation and, as experts say, a good head on his shoulders. Rest assured, he is here to stay and I will definitely have big plans for the young man.

Hardik Pandya made us believe that the comeback could be special. In a successful IPL campaign, all three traits of Pandya came to the fore as he led debutants Gujarat Titans to their maiden title win. Pandya, the captain, was a surprise, the batsman in him gave peace of mind and as a bowler, the star Indian all-rounder was unexpected… in a good way of course. Hardik bowled more than 140 overs, which promises to be a big asset for the Indian team. And while he missed bowling in a few matches, the fact that he came back and took three wickets in the final means that Kung Fu Pandya is back with a bang.

Great Britain’s English all-rounder Liam Livingstone would be proud of his performances even if his team Punjab Kings failed to qualify for the finals. Livingstone, who was bought for a whopping INR 11.5 crore, entered the tournament with a reputation to defend and the 28-year-old certainly lived up to it. With the bat, Livingston made 437 runs with four half-centuries and off-spin bowling, he took six wickets with a best figure of 3/27. And who can forget the 117-metre six he smoked off Mohammed Shami?

The second big comeback story of the season. A year ago, Dinesh Karthik was considered finished when he was commentating in England and later became an analyst for a prominent cricket website. And here he is… back in the Indian team with a stellar IPL season behind him. Karthik ended the season with a half-century of 330 runs, but more than the runs, Karthik’s role as a finisher and savior is what grabbed the headlines. Karthik has been the perfect number 5, 6 for RCB as he has repeatedly bailed them out of trouble with cameos and effective knocks. This season of Karthik will be remembered for a long time.

Another IPL…another Rashid show. The best spinner in the world has been brilliant in his first season for the new franchise. Rashid did what he does best: stop runs, deceive the batsmen and bowl classic deliveries. With 19 wickets, Rashid’s economy for the season was just over 6.5 and his best figures of 4/24 were among the best T20 spells ever seen in the IPL. Moreover, Rashid’s knocks of 40, 31 not out and an unbeaten 19 with the bat were some of the best counter-attacking cameos this season.

Harshal Patel holds the position despite Jasprit Bumrah being a close rival. Last year’s leading wicket-taker, Harshal knew he would come into the tournament with a hundred eyes. And the fast bowler proved that he is not a one-season wonder. Harshal was impressive with the new ball but even more magnificent in the dead overs. Despite dealing with a personal loss in the middle of the season, Harshal’s schedule has only jumped. His figures of 3/35 against Chennai Super Kings and 4/34 against Punjab Kings are the stuff of legends.

Chahal proved why he is the best spinner in India. After being released from the RCB team, Chahal played his first season for Rajasthan Royals and became a Purple Cap winner. Chahal was left out of India’s T20 squad for the World Cup last year, and ahead of this year’s edition, he gave the selectors a strong reason for his inclusion. The guile was back, the lightning was back… and most importantly, Chahal looked menacing and took wickets, including his only hat-trick this season.

Umran Malik is the feel good story of this IPL. The 21-year-old from Jammu and Kashmir has made more waves than anyone else. All the legends from around the world have given their opinion on Umran’s performance this year, his killer pace makes him stand out from the crowd. At 157 kmph, Umran became the second fastest delivery in the IPL, taking five wickets, four fors and two three-irons in the season. With every game, the clamor for Umran’s inclusion in the Indian team grew louder before the young pacer’s Indian dream finally came true. Team India if you are listening. Release Umran Malik as soon as possible.

Vanindu Hasaranga fetched ₹ 10.75 crore in the IPL mega auction and while the Sri Lankan spinner failed to ignite the season in the first few matches, he did turn the corner in a lackluster part of the tournament. Hasaranga finished with 26 wickets, including a five-wicket haul and a four-wicket haul.
